Keeping Workers Happy During the Holidays
Many small businesses choose to remain open during the holidays in order to compete with big retailers and make a little extra revenue. Consequently, someone has to work those hours, someone who would probably rather spend the holidays with family and friends. But since not all businesses can afford to give holiday bonuses or overtime pay, here are some tips to help keep employee morale high during the holiday season:
Give workers flexibility – Allow employees to make some choices in which shifts they work. Giving workers the option to switch shifts with other employees is another way to keep them happy.
Give back when possible – Give employees a small token of your appreciation during the holidays, even if it’s just a $10 gift card or homemade cookies.
Get festive – Decorating the workplace, throwing a party or playing games can help get employees in the holiday spirit.
Consider your short-term employees – Make sure you recognize and appreciate additional staff during the holidays just as you would your full-time workers.
Make yourself seen – Tell them in person how much you appreciate their hard work.
