Michigan Tax Amnesty Program Begins May 15th

At Lewis & Knopf, CPAs, P.C., it is our priority to make sure you stay informed and "ahead of the game." We take a sincere interest in your financial well-being and are here to help you with any issues that may arise. With this in mind, due to the lack of amnesty programs throughout the country this year, we feel it is important that you stay aware of current programs, including the Michigan tax amnesty program on May 15th.

About the Michigan Tax Amnesty Program

Michigan will soon be offering a tax amnesty program that runs from May 15, 2011 through June 30, 2011, including income tax, Michigan Business Tax, Single Business Tax, sales and use tax, and withholding tax for tax years ending prior to December 31, 2009. Local taxes, including property taxes, are not eligible for amnesty.

The 2011 tax amnesty program allows taxpayers to settle tax liabilities with the state and avoid penalty payments. Qualifying taxpayers also avoid civil and criminal penalties, and prosecution by the Michigan Department of Treasury. This is a great opportunity to get your Michigan taxes in order, because states will become more strict with the imposition of penalties after the program expires.

The application and full payment, including interest, must be postmarked by June 30th. Apply early to avoid the continued accrual of interest.
