Shopping Strategies for this Year’s Holiday Season

This holiday season may be a little different than what you remember in years past. Inventories are tighter and fewer late-season sales are expected this year. But don’t let that scare you because we’ve got five strategies to help you make the most out this year’s shopping season:

Look beyond the discounts. Pay attention to value-adds like reward points or package deals. Sometimes they can provide more savings than a sale.

Hold out for free shipping. If the retailer is requiring a minimum purchase for free shipping that’s higher than your liking, wait for a better offer. The National Retail Federation (NRF) expects 93% of retailers to offer free shipping promotions this year.

Bring a smartphone. A lot of retailers are offering in-store specials and coupons if you show your phone at the register or scan a code.

Rethink Black Friday. What you did last year might not work this year. Stores are going to be even more competitive with their sales this year because many are planning on opening at midnight so plan to get there earlier.

Don’t rely on Cyber Monday. Don’t plan on waiting until Monday to buy because it’s unlikely you’ll get a better price than in store.
